Signs of Water Damage
Water damage is generally caused by either external flooding or an internal leak.
Any damage due to flooding would be ‘primary’ and therefore would not cause mould or paint peeling as the water would enter the property very quickly.
Water damage caused by an internal leak can sometimes take a while to be discovered.
This means that the water damage can be more severe.
Some clues to water damage caused by an internal leak might include:
- Discolouration on walls (read How to Dry Out Walls After Water Damage)
- Paint peeling
- Signs of mould
- Floors rotting
In addition to visible evidence, water damage could also be identified by musty smells of damp.
This could be a key indication of hidden issues requiring professional water damage restoration services.

Levels of Water Damage
There are four levels – or classes – of water damage that can help determine the seriousness of the situation.
Class 1 – Caused by clean/potable water. This is the lowest level, indicating minimal damage has occurred.
Class 2 – Caused by grey water, often from a washing machine leak or dishwasher leak. Water damage is likely to have spread beyond a localised area, and you might be able to smell damp.
Class 3 – Caused by black water, i.e. sewage or from a flooding event. At this level of water damage, it is likely to have affected structural parts of the building. The restoration process will require thorough investigation.
Class 4 – Caused by contaminated water, e.g. water that has been contaminated with asbestos/heavy metals/chemicals/etc. This is the most severe level of water damage. Restoration should be carried out by experienced professionals with the relevant skills and equipment.
Vinci Response’s Water & Flood Damage Restoration Process
Once you have contacted our flood water damage restoration team, our experts will conduct a site survey to assess the overall damage and identify any potential hazards.
As part of this initial process, they will be able to identify the type of flood water present.
Types of Flood Water
Clean Water
Water that does not present a health risk and is uncontaminated at the source.
Grey Water
Water that has been tainted with contaminants or germs. It is dangerous to consume and might make you sick.
Black Water
High concentrations of noxious pollutants (such as germs and poisons) with an offensive smell. Poses a significant risk to one’s health.
Flood Water Damage Restoration
Before the restoration process can begin, the flood water must be removed.
We use various methods to remove water from homes and commercial properties.
You can find out more information about our flood water clean-up services and drying solutions.
We will begin the flood damage repair procedure once the building has dried out sufficiently.
This involves replacing any necessary dry-lining, timber, and plasterboard that the flooding has ruined.
We will leave your building in a condition that is as similar to that of before the flood as we can manage.
